Passing your PADI Open Water Diver course

Alex-classrom

Alex contacted us by e-mail in May asking details about starting his PADI Open Water course. On the Catching me by surprise when he arrived, Alex contacted me by telephone on 22nd June around 09:00 asking to start the PADI Open Water course that morning. Lucky for Alex Koh Samui was a little quiet on the diving front so told him that we could start around 11:00.

Picking Alex up from his accommodation in Lamai we headed off to our teaching facility at Temple Gardens. After completing the relevant paperwork Alex started to watch the PADI Open Water DVD and complete his knowledge reviews. It was very relaxed as we went through in detail the first 3 chapters of the PADI Open Water manual and the first 3 sections on the DVD. After a traditional Thai lunch we progressed steadily through the final 2 chapters of the manual and last 2 sections of the Open Water DVD. Probably not the easiest classroom day I've ever had but Alex would probably be the first to admit he's not the most enthusiastic student.

The boat schedule took us to Sail Rock to complete dives 1 & 2 of the PADI Open Water program. With a pre-dive safety check and a near perfect entry we made our way to the buoy line to start our descent.Alex showed great control with his descent and we stayed around 8 meters looking at the different species of fish and corals. Upon reaching the surface Alexís smile was evidence that he had really enjoyed his first dive of the course and he couldnít wait to go back in. After a light lunch and about an hourís surface interval it was time to enter the water again. As there is no sandy bottom available to conduct the skills required on dive 2 Alex showed great composure as we completed them on the buoy line at around 5 meters. After another great dive it was time to head back to Koh Samui and for Alex another day to wait before diving the warm tropical waters of the Gulf once more.

The sea was calm and the sun shining as we made our way by speedboat off the coast of Koh Samui.Mango bay is a beautiful, sheltered coral bay and we started with some surface skills before making a very nice controlled descent to the sandy bottom. Having a great time Alex experienced the calming and almost hypnotic state that diving offers and looked fully in control of his buoyancy. Giving me the okay sign whenever I looked around the smile was evident through his regulator and I knew then that the diving bug had bitten.

The final dive of Alexís open water dive was at a dive site called Twin Rocks.Introducing Alex to even more coral and marine life it was time to head back to the boat and ascend. Once on the surface Alex thanked me for a truly astonishing experience and promised to return and complete his PADI Advanced Open Water. After returning to Koh Samui we completed all the paperwork and gave Alex his temporary certification. After a very enjoyable 4 days Alex joined me and a few friends that evening to celebrate his achievement with a few beers at the Samui Bungy Club watching the world cup and sharing his experience.
