AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty

The AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course is designed to inform you about the world’s coral reefs. This delicate ecosystem is under threat in most areas of the world. The more we, as divers and ambassadors for our underwater world can educate and inform our children and piers the more chance we have in help saving these delicate living organisms. As a scuba diver, the health of aquatic ecosystems is often what makes a good dive. Become aware of the fragileness of coral reefs and how you can help preserve them.

Around Koh Samui, Sail rock, and Koh Tao the coral is very healthy. This was demonstrated with the speed of recovery after some of the worse bleaching to hit the Gulf of Thailand in over 15 years. During April of 2010 the water temperature rose to around 32°c. This had a detrimental effect on the coral as the green algae started to die which in turn turned the coral white. By September of 2010 the coral had an amazing 85% recovery rate and continues to recover and strengthen.

Questions we are generally asked:

How old do I have to be?

There is no minimum age or Prerequisites to take part in this course.

What equipment do I need?

Scuba equipment is not required for the AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty program. If divers want to extend this program to incorporate dives all scuba equipment is supplied. This includes Mask, Fins & Snorkel, a B.C.D. (buoyancy control devise), Weight system, Tanks, wetsuit and regulator set.

What learning materials do I need?

The learning materials required for this course can be downloaded from the Project AWARE Foundation.

What will I learn?

Under the guidance of our PADI Instructor The AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course teaches you about the vital role of coral reefs in the marine environment. The course also familiarizes you with the current state of the world's coral reefs and how you can help. You will learn about the Project AWARE Foundation and how coral reefs function. Why they are so important, why many reefs are in serious trouble and what you can do to prevent further decline.

How long is the AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty?

This is a one day course and can be done in the classroom or can incorporate a day’s diving. The schedule of the diving can be found on our dive sites page.

What can I do next?

As you learn about coral reef conservation you may also want to work on a conservation project as part of your PADI National Geographic Diver certification. Since fish life and coral reefs go hand in hand, it also makes sense to learn about fish identification with the AWARE Fish ID course. You may also want to brush up on your underwater photography skills so that you can document and capture images of the conditions of the reefs and species you’re encountering.
