PADI AWARE Fish Identification Specialty

The PADI AWARE Fish Identification Specialty is a must for those wanting to learn about the different fish found in different areas of the world. The Gulf of Thailand has thousands of different species of fish from Whale Sharks, the largest fish in our oceans to “Nemo” one of our favorites.

You’ll find you enjoy your dives even more when you recognize the creatures that you see. The best part of the PADI AWARE Fish Identification course is you can use the skills you learn on every scuba diving vacation because once you learn the main fish families and characteristics it will help you decipher the species you see all over the world. A butterfly fish in the Caribbean is very similar in shape to a butterfly fish in Southeast Asia. Their colours and markings maybe wildly different but with this course you’ll know what fish family it belongs to so it becomes much easier to look up the local name or at least be able to intelligently ask the local scuba instructor what you saw.

Questions we are generally asked:

How old do I have to be?

To enroll in the PADI AWARE Fish Identification Specialty, you must be a PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another organization)

What equipment do I need?

Scuba equipment required for the PADI Boat Diver program is supplied. This includes Mask, Fins & Snorkel, a B.C.D. (buoyancy control devise), Weight system, Tanks, wetsuit and regulator set. You may also want your own fish I.D. slates, reference books or maybe a digital camera. Please contact us for details on purchasing diving equipment.

What learning materials do I need?

Project AWARE’s "Our World Our Water" includes a section on identifying reef fish based on body shape and habitat. Visit Project AWARE Foundation to download your copy today. It is advisable but not compulsory to look at the AWARE Fish I.D. section in the adventures in diving book.

What will I learn?

With the assistance of our PADI Professional Instructor you will gain experience in looking for and identifying the fascinating fish you see underwater. You’ll learn how to identify characteristics of local fish families and species, practice fish identification dive planning, along with organization and procedures to get involved in Fish survey techniques and strategies.

How long is the PADI AWARE Fish Identification Specialty?

This is a one day course. We start our journey to Koh Tao at 08:00 and arrive back to Koh Samui around 15:00. During this time you will be able to take in the beautiful islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao as we travel to our first dive site. After completing our first dive we have a buffet lunch and refreshments on the beach, then after about an hour we head to our second dive site. Once we have completed our second dive we depart back to Koh Samui.

What can I do next?

While you’re learning about fish, you’ll probably also be curious about the different types of coral and want to check out the Coral Reef Conservationist course. You may also want to brush up on your underwater photography skills so that you can document and capture images of the species you’re encountering.
