PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty

The PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course is one of the most popular diving specialties, and the rise of digital underwater photography has made it easier and more fun than ever. Underwater housings are now available for almost any make of camera on the market. But making the most of your camera underwater can be a challenge. Lighting underwater is very different to that above the surface and understanding this is an important factor for taking good underwater photographs.

This is a great way to relive those magical moments. Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Magnificent Corals, and Nudibranch, with the correct techniques and guidance from our PADI professional instructor you can learn how to take great photographs. From distance shots for the big fish, to macro shots getting up close to the tiniest of shrimp, we will get you focused in on great shots. 95% of the photo's on this web site and all of the photo's in the CSI: SAMUI Gallery were taken by CSI owner Paul Cook.

Questions we are generally asked:

How old do I have to be?

PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or have a qualifying certification from another organization) are able to take part in the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer program. Your Underwater Photography Adventure Dive in the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver / Adventure Diver course credits (at your instructor’s discretion) as the first dive in the PADI Underwater Photographer specialty course

What equipment do I need?

Scuba equipment required for the PADI Boat Diver program is supplied. This includes Mask, Fins & Snorkel, a B.C.D. (buoyancy control devise), Weight system, Tanks, wetsuit and regulator set. For this specialty we also use a Canon IXUS 75 and Canon G11 with underwater housings. We also advise a blank white slate to adjust white balance settings.

What learning materials do I need?

You will need the PADI Digital Underwater Photography crew pack. You are also able to complete the theory on-line with PADI eLearning.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to choose the right underwater camera system for you. General maintenance tips to care for your camera and housing. The PADI SEA method for getting great shots quickly and the three primary principles for good underwater photos. White balance techniques and colour rendering. Digital file formatting, exposure settings and framing. We can also upon request show how to edit the pictures you have taken.

How deep do we go?

Depending on your level of experience we try and keep the depths to around 18 meters. Not only do we get more light penetration but many of the best corals are found in shallow water. For large pelagic species we dive a little deeper to get those face to face shots.

How long is the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty?

This course can be completed in 1 day. Depending on what your interests are we chose the best dive site for you. A general itinerary is as follows: We start our journey to Koh Tao at 08:00 and arrive back to Koh Samui around 15:00. During this time you will be able to take in the beautiful islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao as we travel to our first dive site. After completing our first dive we have a buffet lunch and refreshments on the beach, then after about an hour we head to our second dive site. Once we have completed our second dive we depart back to Koh Samui.

What can I do next?

Two excellent specialties to pair with underwater photography are the PADI Enriched Air Diver course, and the PADI Dry Suit Diver course on your way to PADI Master Scuba Diver The PADI Enriched Air Diver course allows you to extend your time underwater so you have more time to capture images. In cooler climates, a dry suit allows you to dive comfortably longer, and to make more dives. You may also find the Peak Performance Buoyancy course gives you helpful tips to optimize your weighting and skills so you’ll be in better position to capture that perfect picture.
